How can I get a student loan if my parents haven't filed taxes?

jane | March 19, 2010 | | portal.polala.com

  • I really want to go back to school after taking a semester off. The problem is, my parents haven't filed their taxes for last year. The reason is confidential but the point is, I can't get any student loans without my Fafsa being turned in with their tax information. I'm 21 years old and I do my taxes on my own and I have already filed way back in January 2008. How can I get a student loan without using my parents. Can I get one on my own. I live at home, and my parents claim me on their taxes. However, How can I change that status without moving out of the house?

  • It doesnt matter if your parents claim you or not, it doesnt matter whether you file your own taxes; all of that is irrelevant to FAFSA. The ONLY relevant info here is that you are 21 years old and you have parents, they need to submit their info in order for you to qualify for financial aid. That is the bottom line. If your parents dont file their taxes, you are SOL. Besides that, it's the law. They need to file. You might be able to get some private loans if your parents are willing to co-sign, but those loans are bad, bad, bad. I would never take one, the terms are really sucky

  • If they claim you for a dependent you are going to have to file the FFA with their stuff too.

  • If they claim you for a dependent you are going to have to file the FFA with their stuff

  • Whether they claim you as a dependent is unimportant. For FAFSA purposes, you are dependent until 24 years old. You cannot sek independent status unless you are 100% independent of your parents - and the federal government will investigate.

The only loan option you'll have is a private (not student, so not deferred until after graduation) loan. Your parents, however, will most likely need to co-sign on that.

Why not take 1 - 2 hours per week and research/apply for scholarships? If you're willing to put in the time, you'll be rewarded. Check out www.fastweb.com or www.freetuition.com. There are plenty of others - good "scholarships" and you'll find a mother load. Just keep in mind scholarships are FREE, any site that asks you to pay for an application, a filing fee, or anything else beyond a stamp is SCAMMING you!

On a related note, your parents really should file their taxes, regardless of their reason not to previously. In times of financial problem, the government will seek harder after "their" money.

Can anyone tell me the name of the painting/poster Chuck Bass has hanging on his bedroom wall over his bed? Can you help me solve this physics problem?
