Massage Therapist tax question. Expenses before start of business.?

jack | March 19, 2010 | | portal.polala.com

  • I'm a massage therapist in Ontario, Canada. I'll be subcontracted to do work starting 2009. Graduated July of 2008.
I've made purchases for the set up of my business during my school and prior to that (2004 - 2008) i.e. computer, printer, uniform, shoes and so forth.
Can I use those purchases for deduction in 2009? Would I need to write those expenses on my 2009 ledger?
Of course I have the receipts (so important)

If someone can answer my question that would be great.

  • As a massagetherapist you probably will work independently. and i am thinkin that any purchasees used for you r job ca nbe a write oof f. But be sure to produce receipts and keep all records for finances ready for tax time.

    good luck

  • It appears that those expenses were more of personal education expenses nature (education supplies and equipment, as discussed later) than pre-business expenditures.

You graduated from your massage therapist training in July 2008, and now wish to deduct the 2004-2008 expenses ("computer, printer, uniform, shoes, and so forth"). How many years were your massage therapist training anyway (4 yrs?).

Assuming that you were in a qualified program of an accredited education institution, those expense are non-claimable education "supplies and equipment" payments.

I think you might have a hard time to convince the tax dept that these school expenses or personal expenses are deductible business expenses of 2009. You situation is similar to quite a few technical college graduates (e.g., car mechanics) or university graduates (doctors, pharmacists, etc.) who might wish to use your logic. The better view is that you cannot deduct these 2004-2008 expenses against your 2009 business income.

  • They would be deductible based on the amount of use that is for the business and what you used for private use. Generally, the IRS wants these purchases to be clearly done for the business which is not true in your case. You bought them way too early to be clearly for business use.
