Ive had my 1999 jetta 2.0 for about a month now, i bought it used with about 159,000 miles on it. Now i put about 1500 on it. So i was in my driveway today letting my car warm up, when i came out side, this light was on and the tempature was on 280 degrees temp ... my friend opend my hood and told me it was overheating. Therefore i re-filled my Anti freeze, and about 20 mins later same thing happened... Also i realized that the fan that cools the radiator was not turning on. So i turned the Ac on and it came on. When i turned it off it went off. So im confused someone help me please. I need my car on the road!

The cooling fan has two modes of operation, one is with the aircon in which the cooling fan will run for as long as the aircon is running.
The other is via the radiator fan switch, which sounds to be your problem here. I would say the thermostatic fan switch is at fault. Its not the fan motor because the fan works with the aircon.
The are usually screwed into the radiator. Ask someone to check it out for you.
Very best regards
GeordieCheck the automatic engine cooling fan ...
it might not be working ...
smile..The most likely problem is the fan relay. When you turn the A/C on that relay is bypassed. The relay is usually made of shiny silver colored metal. It is square and will be located close to radiator. It might be under a plastic fairing that covers the top of the radiator. You just unplug it and plug a new one in.
The next problem it could be is the temp sensor which is screwed into the radiator with wires going to it. It will be under neath the top radiator hose. You might have to look hard to see it. It is usually close to battery but will be screwed into radiator. You have to drain some coolant out of radiator before taking it out. After you get it out it is easy to troubleshoot if you have a multi-meter. Just put it in a pan of water and put it on a heat source like a stove. Clip your leads from you multimeter set on resistance to it. As the water heats the meter will read continuity if it is working. I rarely see these sensors fail.
The last and most expensive reason would be the ECM or electric control module. It will be located on the driver's side right under the edge of the windshield. It under the hood. It has the ignition module bolted to the top of it. You have to remove a plastic cover to see it. It has a cable going to it with a very long plug with about 21 pins inside the plug. These ECM's on Volkswagens are notorious about going out. One of the first things they do is not operate the fan when they are failing. If someone has been troubleshooting with a test light on the electrics and has caused a spark that is enough to make it fail. A brand new one from the dealer is about $400. I found one for $40 on Craiglist from a car dealer that was junking out a Jetta. I had to tell him where it was located on car and offered him the 40 bucks and he said ok. I've also seen used ones on E-Bay.you're ok to run it as long as you run the AC. Don't run it unless you can be sure the fan will run. You can also run it out on the road as long as air is pulling through. Keep your eye totally on the temp gage. Then you'll have to get the sensor fixed.Have some one check your thermostat. This may lead to many problems. such as the ones you explained. The fan will only come on if the sensors tell it to. if those sensors are bad the fan wont work properly and you will have an overheating problem. Also check for leaks around radiator. check all hoses in and out and trace them make sure there are no leaks. if there are leaks it could cause overheating as well.http://autorepair.about.com/library/faqs...i would take it in to a body shop, probably some rewiring needs done
but you shouldnt turn on the a/c, it runs off the engine and especially while ur going through mountains they discourage it because the engine works more in mountains and doesnt need the extra job to overheat it#If you have any other info about this subject , Please add it free.# |

Can anyone tell me the name of the painting/poster Chuck Bass has hanging on his bedroom wall over his bed?
Can you help me solve this physics problem?
