What is going on in a theist's mind when he says "Atheists don't believe in anything"?

webmaster | March 19, 2010 | | portal.polala.com

  • What exactly do they mean by that? Are they copying a line from the religious propaganda that they get exposed to in websites / church / religious media?

  • I'm going to go with the "4 year old's logic" answer too, though the "tumbleweeds" one is a close second.

  • I wish I knew.

    In fact...no I don't...

I think they believe the answer to *everything* is 'God'. (their 'god') so then...

... if you don't believe that, then you must believe in 'nothing'.

It's like a 4 year old's logic. All or nothing.

  • For them, the ´´everything´´ is god.
We do not believe in it, so, by their logic, we do not believe in ´´anything´´
*my cat is black, i can see it, so, i believe it*

  • I presume when a theist says "Atheists don't believe in anything" - what's going on in their mind is; the presumption that it is blatantly obvious they mean 'within the context of belief in a God.'

It is not likely that they think you literally don't believe in ANYTHING is it !!!!!!!!?
Like - you don't believe in the moon or sausages or milk!

The most annoying thing in the world is when ignorant people look down their noses at people, mistaking them for even more ignorant people, when they are not.

You are funny sometimes my dear rodent, and didn't you stir up some bigoted foolish answers too!

  • I have no idea, just nod and smile and then tell them you don't like their religion and hopefully it will all be over.

  • I believe in lots of stuff.... gravity, evolution, exercise, the Sun rising in the east and setting in the west....The Earth spinning towards the East and the stars shining because of gravity and nuclear fusion....hmmm....

  • They believe they're the only ones who control their lives. They don't believe the world was created or designed by any intelligent force.

  • I dont think I have ever said that...but, I think it means "hope"

  • This accusation, which I have heard countless times from theists, is just really hot air that they spew because they lack a sound argument. The religious believers who make this argument live in such a narrow world that nothing makes sense to them unless a deity exists. So they cannot imagine any other person making sense of the world without also sharing their beliefs. They are basically projecting their own ignorance onto other people.

  • What are they thinking? they're thinking the same Homer's thinking

    when he thinks at all.

  • let me illustrate it for you:

  • I think you will need to give us a little more information than that, who did you hear say that? and in what context?

This question is confusing, because I thought it was the atheist who says that he doesn't believe in anything. I would think it was the theist that would argue with that.

Edit: UK sense, that's utterly inane, why would anyone debate about whether anyone believes in sausages? If this were a question about sausages then it should have been stated as such. And put in the Sausage section. Oi.

  • There is always enough room,,,to expand your mind!!! Hope you are doing fine, and well icarus62!

  • That statement actually makes no sense.

Talk about paradoxical...it bugs me almost as much as the statement "You believe in a higher power? You are a good soul" as I recently had from a JW. Shockingly idiotic.

    toodles

  • They think they know best!

  • Very little, as usual.

Can anyone tell me the name of the painting/poster Chuck Bass has hanging on his bedroom wall over his bed? Can you help me solve this physics problem?
