Who were the mormons?

anonym | March 18, 2010 | | portal.polala.com

  • You speak of them like they were past tense. They still exist and thrive. Not sure how many there are in the world but there are millions.

Mormonism is a branch of Christianity. The Mormons believe that Joeseph Smith was instructed by an angel I believe to write a third book of the Bible. He founded his religion and met a great deal of persecution in Illinois. It culminated with his arrest and execution by a mob. For some reason I thought he died while escaping from jail. You might want to research that if it's of interest.

The majority of the Mormons to escape persecution set out for Utah where they set up an independent nation for a brief time. Eventually the US swallowed them up, but it was not a happy marriage. The Mormons distrusted Americans. They felt slighted when the US Military refused to aid them against Natives and in times of famine the Mormons had only themselves to rely on. The US wanted no part of Utah until they basically annexed it.

Mormons early on gained noteriety and earned a good bit of anger by practicing bigamy. The main branches of the Mormon church do not condone Bigamy today, however small split off sects do practice it still.

Mormons are obsessed with ancestry. They have easily the greatest genalogical database in the world. Their baptizing the dead has caused a few riffs between the Mormons and the Jewish community as the Jews really do not want their ancestors or any other Jew baptized alive or dead into another religion. Most other groups really don't pay a great deal of attention too it. The details you'll have to ask a Mormon about.

The Mormons are remarkably self sufficient as a group. Compared to the US and world as a whole they tend to be well mannored, highly educated and industrious. Officially substances like booze, tobacco, caffiene and a whole list of other substances is banned. Mormon communities have varying degrees of tolerances for usage of such substances.

Right now Mormonism is in crisis. DNA testing has refuted a section of the new testament and this is causing a serious conflict between science and scripture. The Mormon church is working dilligently to resolve this issue and carrying on as usual but especially in Latin America where many people were converted believing they were a lost tribe of Israel are disallusioned.

  • were or are?

They are fringe American "Christian " sect who have incorporated a lot of Gnostic and Masonic values in their doctrines.Their scripture is founded in the rewritten King james bible now called the book of Mormon.

After years of persecution and the death of their founder Joseph Smith they settled in Utah. USA.

EDIT : Unlike exputkim who has directed you to a Mormon apologists website that will regal you with their doctrine and apology , the answer given by draciron is one of the most sound I have read in ages.

Can any Mormons please tell me where I will find Ruins of the civilizations , battles, coins and writings mentioned in the BOM, especially the elephants that they claim. Why are there no native American elephants?

  • Mormons are a really nice group of people who do a lot of good.
sadly Mormons are members of a "made up" religion.
The creator of this religion was Joseph smith.
Mormons have a lot of different beliefs. They call themselves Christians but they believe that Jesus and satin are brothers they also believe that there is no hell and we all come from a Spirit world.

There have been really cruel acts caused by Mormons in history such as The mountain meadows massacre http://www.religioustolerance.org/lds_ma...

But you have to keep in mind that most religionsâ ™ have done many acts of violence.

Basically Mormonism in a nutshell is a man named Joseph claims he saw god and his son Jesus and they told him that our bible was wrong and Joesph smith wrote the book of Mormon which tells Mormons what is right and wrong.

    Mormonism has some hidden details
They where special underwear everywhere because it protects them.
They also believe that men over power women.
Mormons donâ ™t believe in one god they believe we all are gods well men are anyway.

Just look at this for some more clarity.

I have been studying Mormonism for a long time. I have read the book of Mormon and many of my friends a Mormons

  • who were...are they extinct, finally -LOL.
    a cult, ex-mormon.

  • properly named The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. watch out you will get all kinds of weird answers on here. go to www.mormon.org and find the truth

  • I think you mean "who are the Mormons?" We're not dead yet! :)

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormonism) is a beautiful Christian religion. Because Mormons believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ and consider Him to be the way to salvation, they are clearly a Christian denomination. It is true that they are not an orthodox denomination (they are neither Protestant, Catholic, nor Eastern Orthodox), because they don't accept the post-New Testament creeds, but their Christ-centered theology clearly qualifies them for the Christian label.

You should be extremely careful when trying to learn about Mormons from others. There are many who hate the Mormons and spread lies, distortions, and conspiracy theories about them. Others think they understand Mormon doctrine because of "what they've heard," but are actually misinformed.

Because Mormons are Christian, we believe in most of the things that Christians believe, including:

    1) Christ is divine and salvation comes only through Him.
    2) The Bible is the word of God.
    3) People ought to love one another.

Mormons are a unique branch of Christianity, however. We are neither Catholic nor Protestant, so naturally we have some different beliefs. Most of the differences are minor. One significant difference has to do with the authority to act in God's name. Mormons believe that soon after the death of Christ and His apostles, the early Christian Church was greatly influenced by Greek and Roman philosophies and political pressures. Despite the efforts of many good men and women, the true Church of Christ was eventually lost because of these outside pressures and internal, man-made changes. Mormons believe that God reestablished the original Church of Christ in 1820 through a man named Joseph Smith.
